'World of Warcraft: Cataclysm' sells 4.7 million copies, sets record

"World of Warcraft: Cataclysm" continues to wow the gaming world with its sales numbers. The third expansion to the six-year-old game has now sold a whopping 4.7 million copies in the one month since it launched.

The "Cataclysm" expansion, which launched on Dec. 7th, brought big changes to the online role-playing game — changes that affect the way the online world looks and the way the game is played. In the "WoW" story, these changes were caused by a dragon known as Deathwing the Destroyer who tore apart the landscape.

"We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet," Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, said in a press release Monday. "We’ve been floored by the community's response so far."

Recently we reported that "Cataclysm" had sold 3.3 million copies in the first 24 hours it was available. All in all, these numbers make "Cataclysm" the best-selling PC game of all time. Beating out...well...itself.

The previous record holder for biggest PC game sales in a month's time? "World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King" – the second "WoW" expansion.

In fact, heads up to "WoW" fans out there:  "Cataclysm" is turning out to be so popular, Blizzard made another announcement in its press release:

"To keep pace with the continued growth of 'World of Warcraft' as well as development on other Blizzard Entertainment games, the company is currently hiring for numerous open positions."

So rather than skipping your day job to play "World of Warcraft," here's your chance to make "World of Warcraft" your day job. Think you have what it takes to be a "WoW" lead quest designer or 3-D character artist, then follow this link.
