While most of us were distracted by the news that Facebook acquired Instagram for a cool billion dollars, the photo-sharing service quietly found another large number to celebrate: 5 million downloads of the recently released Instagram for Android app.
The Instagram for Android app was released less than a week ago — six days ago, if you want to be exact — but it has already been downloaded over 5 million times. (Google Play, formerly known as the Android Market, indicates that the number of Instagram for Android installs falls between five million and ten million at this point.)
All of these numbers are pretty darn impressive considering that it took the iOS version of the app six months to reach five million users, according to the Next Web's Matt Brian.
