After much anticipation, non-profit organization One Laptop Per Child finally launched their affordable, child-friendly slate on Walmart's website. OLPC teamed up with multimedia equipment maker Vivitar to produce the $150 XO Tablet, which features a 7-inch 1,024-by-600 touchscreen with a 1.6GHz dual-core processor running Android Jelly Bean. It also comes with front and rear cameras and Wi-Fi connectivity and is available for pre-order. It will be available in stores in August.

One Laptop Per Child was founded in 2005 with a mission to empower the world's poorest children through education by providing each of them with a rugged, affordable, low-power and connected laptop. The first product of its efforts, the XO laptop, was available starting in late 2006, and has now been through four iterations. OLPC's plans to produce a tablet for the world's children have been troubled, with plans for its self-made XO 3 Tablet scrapped in 2012. But after teaming up with hardware maker Vivitar, the group's efforts appear to have finally borne fruit.

OLPC claims that its first tablet is also the world's first multilingual and Google-certified tablet, available in English and Spanish versions, with French and Italian versions available later this year.

The tablet features XO software designed by the OLPC, including the XO Learning System and the Dreams Dashboard, which tailors learning modules to children based on their career goals. It also comes with more than 100 free pre-loaded apps, games, books and other content. It was not immediately clear whether the XO Tablet would be made available in developing countries or whether the company's U.S. profits would benefit its charitable efforts overseas.
