Namesake of rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd dies

Leonard Skinner, a gym teacher in Florida who inspired the name of the famous Southern rock band, has died. He was 77 NBC's Brian Williams reports.

BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor: High school gym teacher and basketball coach from Jacksonville , Florida , has died. And with him goes a piece of rock and roll history. He was famous at Robert E. Lee High School for the day he sent some young men to the principal's office for wearing their hair too long. They later named their band in his honor. They called it Lynyrd Skynyrd , named after their gym teacher Leonard Skinner , who has died in a nursing home in Riverside , Florida . Mr. Skinner was 77. We're
