Southwest to buy Air Tran for $1.42 billion

The move will expand Southwest's reach in the East Coast and puts the airline in direct competition with Delta Air. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor: A merger in the flying business to report tonight. Southwest is moving to buy AirTran in a $1.4 billion deal that would unite two big discount carriers. AirTran is the former ValueJet . They have over a hundred aircraft and 270 scheduled daily departures. Southwest carries more domestic passengers per year than any other US airline on over 3500 flights a day. This purchase would expand Southwest into 37 more cities. It follows another big merger. Continental and United will formally join together later this week.
