Mideast envoy George Mitchell resigns

As President Obama prepares a Middle East policy address for next week and plans to meet with Israel's Prime Minister, his chief representative to the Middle East announced Friday he is quitting. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor: Here at home the timing couldn't be worse. Just as President Obama prepares a big Middle East policy address for next week and plans to meet with Israel 's prime minister, his chief representative to the Middle East , George Mitchell , said today he's quitting. Mitchell , former federal judge, former senator, former secretary of state, managed to broker peace in Northern Ireland and investigate the steroid scandal in baseball. But a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians, well, after two years of trying he has decided it's time to move on .
