'The American dream is being pulled out from under us'

When Central Falls, R.I., went bankrupt, public service workers like police and firefighters took large hits to their pensions. Now the retirees who have worked for the city for years are stuck trying to figure out what to do in a town whose welcome signs proclaim “a proud past and a promising future.”
