Former Senator Mark Hatfield of Oregon dies

Former Oregon Sen. Mark Hatfield, an outspoken critic of war whose liberal views often put him at odds with fellow Republicans, died Sunday at the age of 89. NBC’s Brian Williams reports.

BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor: I want to take just a moment here to remember a number of notable Americans we 've lost over these past few days, including former Oregon senator Mark Hatfield . He was seared by what he saw in World War II and Iwo Jima , and in Hiroshima after the bomb. In the Senate he broke with his party on some big votes. He was a pacifist, a liberal anti-war Republican.
