LESTER HOLT, anchor: Finally tonight, all due respect to Diana Ross , but when The Supremes send -- sang " You_Can 't_Hurry_Love," they probably didn't envision a new type of matchmaking service in Orlando . For many, these doggy date nights turn into puppy love at first sight. And we get the story from NBC 's Kerry Sanders .

KERRY SANDERS reporting: It's date night for Norville ...

Unidentified Woman #1: He was giving me kisses earlier.

SANDERS: ...and Kabob...

Unidentified Man #1: Oh, it's a good boy.

SANDERS: ...two homeless dogs.

Woman #1: He'll be a handsome dog when I'm done.

SANDERS: Like so many single people, just looking for some loving.

Unidentified Woman #2:

SANDERS: Since we love those before and after pictures, first the before. Norville , a springer spaniel, dropped off at a shelter by his owners due to the tough economy. And Kabob , a stray mutt found living in a ditch. The

plan: If speed dating works for single men and women, then why not for dogs?

Unidentified Woman #3: Good boy.

SANDERS: So scrubbed clean and sporting new dos.

Unidentified Woman #4: You smell much better.

SANDERS: Kabob before, Kabob after. Norville before, Norville after.

Unidentified Woman #5: Just be yourself, OK? Just be yourself, Norville , and you'll find a perfect home.

SANDERS: They join a dozen other cleaned up pooches and speed date. The mood set for a little wine and cheese.

Unidentified Man #2: It's speed dating for dogs.

SANDERS: And in just minutes here in Orlando , Kabob finds chemistry. Big date night here, what do you think of Kabob ?

Unidentified Man #3: I love him.

SANDERS: You love him?

Man #3: Yes.

SANDERS: You just met him.

Man #3: That's all it takes.

SANDERS: This fun underscores a serious problem in the United States , too many dogs, not enough owners.

Ms. ABBY BLUM (A New Beginning Pet Care and Rescue): Over 56 percent of the dogs that go to shelters are put to sleep, euthanized, which means killed, dead.

Ms. JESS BAKER: There's a couple over there I want to see.

SANDERS: Jess Baker and Marcus Kapuanu...

Ms. BAKER: I like that little guy over there.

SANDERS: ...want to be part of the solution.

Ms. BAKER: I love him. What's going on, huh?

SANDERS: As for Norville ...

Ms. CINDY WIGGINS: Love at first sight .

SANDERS: ...it really is speed dating . He found his new love, Cindy Wiggins , in but 10 seconds. Unfortunately, speed dating for dogs is a lot like speed dating for humans. You don't always wind up with a match. But -- ooh, there you go. There's always next time. Speed dating for dogs because for so many of these dogs, time is running out .
