Chicago’s former first lady dies

Maggie Daly was the wife of Mayor Richard Daley, and she devoted herself to the schoolchildren of the Windy City. She was 68 years old. NBC News’ Brian Williams reports.

BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor: Maggie Daley has died. For 22 years, back when no one in Chicago could imagine a mayor not named Daley , she was first lady of that city, and she remained an enormously popular figure. She devoted herself to her family, her husband, Mayor Richard Daley , and maintaining their private life, but also to the schoolchildren of Chicago for summer programs, after school programs, on of which we profiled as a NIGHTLY NEWS MAKING A DIFFERENCE segment. She was also an advocate for the arts and architecture in Chicago . Maggie Daley bravely and openly fought breast cancer for nine years. She died surround by her family. She was 68 years old.
