>> reporter: good evening, brian. with no breakthrough to tell you about, this really became a day of political appearances, a . first speaker boehner brought in while senators were away. president obama phoned boehner and had his own photo on taking a holiday shopping trip to the pet store , buying gifts for his daughter who are in hawaii while he's in d.c. aides say they told boehner they must have the two-month extension first and then can work on a one-year deal. the wall street journal surprised everyone with tough words saying they have blown this, calling it a fiasco. brian?
