Emergency announcement panics passengers

British Airways passengers were mistakenly told that the plane may need to make an emergency landing on water. NBC’s Brian Williams reports.

>>> now imagine this, you ear on an overnight british airways flight from miami to london, dinner has been served and cleared. the movie is playing but most passengers have long since drifted off to sleep. it's 3:00 a.m . over the north sea and the silence is broken by this, quote, this is an emergency announce themeannouncement, we will shortly be making an emergency landing on water. 275 people prepared for the worst. passengers were crying, some were screaming until the cabin crew ran down the aisles to announce it was a mistake. an automated announcement triggered on the cockpit while the jet was cruising at 35,000 pet feet. as one passenger put it, we thought we were going to die. the airline handed out letters of apology as passengers got off the plane alive in london.
