Kate Middleton hospitalized for acute morning sickness

It was a much-anticipated announcement: Princess Kate is expecting her first child – but the joy accompanying her closely guarded secret was tempered by a potentially dangerous health condition. NBC’s Keir Simmons reports.

>>> and now to the announcement today big news around the planet. long speculated about, now official word that prince williams and kate middleton are having a baby. the palace went public with the news today, in large part because they had to, because kate went to the hospital for medical treatment . keir simmons has more for us from london, good evening.

>> reporter: good evening, brian, this is the hospital in central london , the mother-to be kate middleton checked in here with a very strong case of morning sickness . the palace says she won't leave here for days. the father, prince william , leaving the hospital after the announcement today. princess kate , the duchess of cambridge, is expecting her first child. last friday, all her former school she was protecting her stomach. reportedly, the queen didn't know about the news until today, but she and other royals are delighted by the news. the announcement came before the palace may have wanted, before the crucial 12-week because of the morning news.

>> everybody is congratulating the couple, kate is in the hospital. although doctors say it is not serious.

>> reporter: just last week, she was seen playing field hockey, no sign of morning sickness . but this week, they drove to the hospital, the palace says she will be there for days. still, the news is being welcomed by britain.

>> overwhelming for the family, and the country.

>> reporter: on the way to 10 downing street .

>> it is absolutely wonderful news. i'm delighted for them, they will make brilliant parents, i'm sure.

>> reporter: a royal baby is big news as it was 30 years ago when prince william was announced, this time, for the first time in british history , the child will be heir to the throne , no matter the gender.

>> if princess kate were to have a little girl , rather than a little boy than she would become queen of england.

>> reporter: there was another sign last week of the announcement to come. william was given a present of baby clothes. i love that, he said, now we know why. now the palace will not say exactly what stage her pregnancy is at, other than she has not yet passed the 12-week stage, meaning we won't see
