Belcher quizzed by cops before killing, video shows

Hours before the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend, he was found sleeping in his car. Those moments were recorded by a police cruiser’s dash camera. NBC’s Michelle Franzen reports.

>>> and tonight we're learning more about what happened in the final hours before that murder/suicide last weekend involving a player for the kansas city chiefs . turns out police spoke to him just hours before the shootings. after finding him asleep in his car. police have just released dash cam video, and nbc 's michelle franzen has the latest.

>> reporter: it was 3:00 a.m ., just hours before the kansas city chiefs linebacker, jovan belcher , shot and killed his girlfriend, kasandra perkins and then took his own life documented on a police cruiser 's dash camera. officers responded to a call describing a suspicious man sleeping in a car outside an apartment building. they found belcher behind the wheel.

>> you live right here? you just need to go upstairs, dude.

>> yeah.

>> we're trying to cut you a break here.

>> reporter: belcher told police he was there to visit a woman. later out of the car he thanked officers before he walked away.

>> thank you. thank you. i do appreciate this. i really do.

>> you have a good one.

>> reporter: police released the video following reports belcher may have been drinking and may have received special treatment. in a statement, police told nbc news they did not have any reason to hold belcher after questioning him. the officers acted appropriately. they did not smell alcohol on him. he was not stumbling, et cetera . so there was nothing more to do than to get him to go inside, which they could not compel him to do. he did not get special treatment. less than five hours later, police responded to a call of a shooting at belcher 's home where he lived with perkins . a second dash cam video shows an officer rushing to arrowhead stadium after hearing belcher was there with his coaches and armed.

>> it looks like they're in negotiation phase trying to get him down.

>> reporter: fans said today they are saddened by the murder/suicide and also reacted to the video.

>> it certainly makes it more tragic, knowing the circumstances that were behind it.

>> it's like a train wreck or a fire. everybody looks at it. they don't want to but they do.

>> reporter: the chiefs are not commenting. the organization has set up a trust for belcher and perkins ' 3 where would daughter. michelle franzen , nbc news, new york.

>>> and there's news tonight involving another pro football player. police say dallas cowboys ' defensive lineman josh brent is being charged with intoxication manslaughter after a single- car accident that killed one of his teammates. linebacker jerry brown was a member of the cowboys' practice squad . police say he was killed when brent, while speeding, hit a curb and the car flipped over.
