Manufacturing plants pop up in ‘right to work’ states

Michigan has long been considered the heart of organized labor. But now that Michigan is a ‘right to work’ state, it may draw new manufacturing plants that had been drawn to ‘right to work’ states in the South. CNBC’s Phil LeBeau reports.

>>> phil lebeau covers the auto industry for cnbc. he is here with us in the studio for a bit more on this phil , again, we are talking about the state of michigan here. how did it come to this?

>> michigan was the heart of organized labor . i mean this is where the uaw was born. for generations, you touched upon it this is where line workers at ford and at gm and at chrysler, they made enough money they could eventually afford a nice bungalow or a middle class house in dearborn or in flint. well, that was then. this is now. and i think even critics of organized labor are looking around in the rust belt and they are saying, where are the latest auto plants being set up? where are the manufacturing plants being set up? in the right-to-work states in the south. so, they are looking around and saying we are not getting new plants here. if they are going to the south because they are right-to-work states, let's change the laws here and maybe then we will start to get some more plants here.

>> we shall see when it goes into effect. phil lebeau, thanks, as always, for stopping by.
