Jurors see graphic crime scene photos at Zimmerman trial

Trayvon Martin’s father quietly left the courtroom after police photos of his son were shown to the jury. George Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of Martin. NBC’s Ron Mott reports.

>>> now to sanford, florida, the murder trial of george zimmerman . an emotional day as the prosecution presented its case and the jury heard details of the chaotic scene just after the killing of trayvon martin that night. something zimmerman claims was done in self-defense. nbc's ron mott covering for us, ron , good evening.

>> reporter: brian, good evening to you. compelling testimony today from prosecution witnesses as they described the scene just after trayvon martin was shot and killed. what the jury heard and saw was disturbing and some of the images you're about to see may be upsetting.

>> the testimony you shall give will be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you god?

>> yes.

>> reporter: a police officer spoke about his efforts to revive the teenager.

>> did you use any type of mask when you first started cpr with trayvon martin ?

>> no, sir, i did not.

>> reporter: martin 's mother sat and his father left the courtroom when photos were shown to the jury.

>> my head was on the cement and he kept slamming it, slamming it.

>> reporter: zimmerman said martin repeatedly attacked him. and when he shot the fatal bullet, martin was straddling him.

>> i thought he had me, so i moved his hands apart.

>> reporter: today police described the position of martin 's body.

>> he was laying down with his head toward the north.

>> reporter: martin 's hooded sweatshirt, a bag of skittles and zimmerman 's gun were put into evidence.

>> basically they are the eyes and ears for law enforcement . they're not supposed to take matters into their own hands.

>> reporter: zimmerman acknowledged following trayvon martin in his call to police.

>> are you following him?

>> yeah.

>> okay, we don't need you to do that.

>> reporter: zimmerman 's attorney asked about cases of self-defense.

>> you're not suggesting in anyway if you are attacked you're not allowed to defend yourself?

>> oh, not at all.

>> neighborhood watch is about staying away from suspects and with physical evidence that's starting to contradict george zimmerman 's account of what happened that fatal night.

>> reporter: we have yet to hear from witness number eight, the young woman on the phone with trayvon martin moments before he was killed. her testimony could come at any time.
