Witness testifies he saw Martin hitting Zimmerman

On Friday a neighbor who contradicted what other witnesses have said about the struggle between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin, was questioned as to how well he could really see in the dark. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming it was self-defense. NBC’s Ron Mott reports.

>>> florida now. the murder trial of george zimmerman , and the central question. what happened on that rainy night last year when zimmerman and trayvon martin struggled, leading zimmerman to fatally shoot the unarmed teenager? a neighbor contradicted what other witnesses have said about the struggle. ron mott with more on today's testimony from sanford, florida. good evening.

>> reporter: lester, good evening to you. who was on top and who was on bottom during that fight remains a mystery tonight. a witness testified that the person on the bottom that that dark night was lighter skinned. george zimmerman .

>> were they going like this?

>> i could not hear that, no.

>> could you hear this?

>> no.

>> reporter: following the prosecutor's lead --

>> was he like this?

>> defense attorney mark o'meara, dropped to the floor, illustrating testimony from a witness who says he saw trayvon martin on top of george zimmerman , on a fighting stance popular in mixed martial arts .

>> the person you know to betray von martin to be on top?

>> correct.

>> he was raining blows down on george zimmerman , right?

>> that's what it looked like.

>> reporter: it was largely supportive of zimmerman 's account of being beaten by martin. but the prosecutor asked how well he could see in the dark.

>> did you ever see the person on the top slamming the person on the bottom's head over and over and over?

>> no.

>> he said he ran back inside to call 911.

>> police, fire, medical.

>> i just heard a shot right behind my house.

>> reporter: reporting what he saw from the second floor.

>> yelling for help?

>> i'm pretty sure the guy is dead out here. holy [ bleep ].

>> zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second degree murder. saying it was self-defense.

>> he said this guy was beating me up, and i shot him.

>> i had to defend myself and i shot him.

>> reporter: a neighbor first on the scene was calm. he asked the man to call his wife.

>> i said your husband has been involved in a shooting, he's been hands cuffed and held for questioning at the sanford police department . and at that time he cut me off and he said just tell her i shot someone.

>> reporter: nearly two dozen witnesses have testified so far.

>> the prosecution putting on the case in chief right now. established bit by bit what they set out to do this week. surprised me how often the defense has turned prosecution's witness to their advantage.

>> reporter: the trial resumed monday morning, and we could hear from the lead investigator in this case, lester.
