ACLU criticizes license plate readers

The scanners that record license plates and enter the information into large databases have been gathering data under the banner of national security, but the ACLU says it’s a violation of privacy rights. NBC’s Brian Williams reports.

>>> depending on where you live, perhaps off seen them mounted on police cars and perhaps you've assumed there's some sort of radar gun when they are actually license plate readers. as the cruiser cruises by, they are constantly scanning and record, the license plates around them. that all goes into a massive database, searching for stolen cars, known criminals and under the loose banner of national security , now the aclu is charging we are all being tracked and the lenses are being used to record americans' vehicular movements in what they say is another erosion of our privacy rights .
