Meet 16 of the nation’s newest millionaires

The Powerball jackpot winners “Oceans 16” will split $86 million. The group included those whose homes Hurricane Sandy damaged or destroyed and the daughter of a New Jersey legislator who sponsored the bill that created the state lottery. NBC’s Katy Tur reports.

>>> finally tonight, by now you may have heard about the 16 luckiest people in american, the new jersey group of co-workers who went through a tough time together and are basking in a sudden reversal of fortune . they're sharing their joy with the rest of us. they're answering the question, what will they do with all their winnings. here's katy tur.

>> reporter: they've been dubbed ocean's 16, a group of nine women and seven men, all good friends. you could call them a cast of characters.

>> my fellow americans. this is my best outfit.

>> reporter: winners of an $86 million powerball jack pot, they are new jersey's luckiest office pool .

>> i had to wake my poor husband up, who was no longer poor.

>> reporter: as of last week, they all worked at the ocean county vehicle maintenance garage. as of this week, they still do.

>> reporter: when it's all divvied up after taxes, they will get $3.8 million. not enough for everyone to retire from here. but certainly enough for some to right some wrongs. hurricane sandy ripped through this county.

>> the first thing i'm going to do is buy me and my daughter a home and bring my dog back home.

>> reporter: terry nichols had seven feet of water on her first floor.

>> everything was knocked over, all pushed down there. the whole backyard was -- everything was like a tornado.

>> reporter: boarded up windows, downed power lines , neighborhoods still scarred by damage. ocean county , new jersey was due for a little bit of good news. in a twist of fate , one of the winners is the daughter of the new jersey legislature who sponsored the law to create the state lottery .

>> he was my hero, i couldn't ask for a better dad, i wish he was here to share in the moment.
