Ariel Castro describes abduction during FBI interrogation

In video obtained of Ariel Castro’s FBI interrogation, the now deceased kidnapper of three Ohio women describes the chilling details of their capture and how he came close to getting caught on several occasions. NBC’s Kate Snow reports.

>>> we have a report here tonight that revisits that awful kidnapping case in cleveland, those three women held captive by ariel castro , held for years inside that house in cleveland. nbc news has obtained video of castro 's interrogation, recorded just hours after his arrest. that was back in may. out of respect for the survivors in this case, we're just airing portions and not the worst of these descriptions. the story tonight from our national correspondent kate snow .

>> reporter: during four hours of questioning, a hand kufd ariel castro destroyed how he abducted and abused the three women. castro rarely showed remorse, at times seemed surprised by what he had gotten away with, describing a number of close calls over the years that easily could have led to his arrest.

>> i kept michelle upstairs secretly.

>> reporter: when he first kidnapped michelle knight, castro said he had a girlfriend who would visit the house. one day she noticed a tv on in the room where michelle was secretly held.

>> it was a close call ?

>> yeah.

>> reporter: he described using amanda berry's cell phone to call her mother and tell her amanda was aalive.

>> what did you say to her mom?

>> i think i said something that i have her daughter and that she's okay. and that she's my wife now. something like that, you know. probably not the exact words.

>> okay. what was her mom's response?

>> i hung up so we didn't have a conversation.

>> reporter: he also told investigators that cameras should have captured him at gina dejesus' school just 15 minutes before he abducted her.

>> you said we could have broke the case right then and there.

>> because they had surveillance cameras .

>> nothing led us to talk to him. there were no indications that we should go talk to him.

>> reporter: we spoke to vicki anderson of the fbi in may.

>> we canvass the neighborhood, did all those things. nothing led us to ariel castro .

>> reporter: during a break in the questioning, castro was left alone. he ate a slice of pizza, then started to pace around the room.

>> the bottom line is, i know i'm going to go away for a long time. i know it.

>> reporter: in the interrogation, castro said he was actually glad the women had escaped.

>> i will not let you define me. or affect who i am.

>> reporter: on the day castro was sentenced to life in prison , michelle knight spoke forcefully.

>> i spent 11 years in hell, now your hell is just beginning.

>> of course, castro 's life ended this week when he hung himself. you may be wondering about that phone call he made to amanda 's mother. the fbi says they were aware of it at the time but they were unable to pinpoint the location of the caller and they thought it even might be a prank. brian?
