May 24, 1962: Scott Carpenter is second American to orbit the earth

From the Archives: Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter lifts off from Cape Canaveral Florida becoming the second American to orbit the Earth and the fourth American in space. He is heard on lift-off speaking with fellow astronaut Gus Grissom. Carpenter’s ocean splashdown was off course and it took 40-minutes to locate him in his life raft. NBC’s Frank McGee reports.
