Did coaches ask Incognito to ‘toughen up’ Martin?

On Wednesday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel cited multiple sources when reporting coaches asked Miami Dolphins player Richie Incognito to “toughen up” teammate Jonathan Martin. NBC’s Kerry Sanders reports.

>>> now to the growing scandal involving bullying and the nfl . a lot of people have been slow to come around on the idea, reluctant to believe spg like bullying could exist in what's designed to be a highly violent testosterone-fuelled world inside pro football . and opinions are widely divided on this. but tonight the nfl has now appointed a special council to investigate the miami dolphins because of the treatment and threats one player received. our report tonight from nbc's kerry sanders in south florida .

>> reporter: at the miami dolphins training facility today, practice on the gridiron. but it's what happened off the field that has the team on defense. today the south florida sun sentinel reports multiple sources say coaches asked player richie inc kogincognito to toughen up jonathan martin .

>> if the review reveals anything that needs to be corrected we'll the take all necessary measures to fix it, to ensure this doesn't happen again.

>> reporter: the nfl is now conducting an investigation into allegations of bullying in the dolphins locker room . espn has reported sources heard soim voicemails including one in which incognito said, hey, you're still a rookie, i'll kill you. today incognito didn't stop to talk as he drove by in a new ferrari. yesterday he did talk.

>> i'm just trying to weather the storm right now. this will pass.

>> reporter: for as long as most players and former nfl players remember, what happens in the locker room stays here. disputes are worked out privately inside these walls.

>> a lot of people would find half of what goes on in the locker room very offensive in corporate america . it would never fly. h.r. wouldn't have enough people working for them for some of the things that take place.

>> reporter: jonathan martin has made no comment since he left the training facility last week. some say martin may have a difficult time returning.

>> the nfl is a brutally violent sport. now you have a guy that wouldn't stand up to his own teammate that was picking on him. i think he's jeopardized the rest of his nfl career. i think on some level there will be a scarlet level associated with jonathan martin for whatever team he attempts to play for going forward.

>> reporter: espn reports that jonathan martin briefly checked himself into a hospital here for emotional distress and that tonight he's with his parents in california. brian?
