>>> and now we turn our focus to the south. you will remember just as we came on the air last night they were getting clobbered. and as we saw hundreds of people had to abandon their cars on highways due to snow and ice. peter alexander is in charlotte again, good evening.

>> reporter: brian, good evening to you the snow did not stop falling here until late in afternoon. in total it was the worst winter storm to hit charlotte in ten years, nearly nine inches falling all day long. crews are picking up snow trying to drop it off at dump sites like this. in raleigh as you noted today hundreds of drivers who abandoned their cars in the peak of the storm today came back just trying to find them. the state troopers and national guardsmen went door-to-door to make sure nobody was stranded so they could plow through. and in atlanta, they're thawing after the major storm. back here, brian, the real concern is that the snow will melt and then re-freeze overnight causing significant black ice .

>> peter alexander in north carolina in charlotte again tonight. peter, thank you.
