8.2 Magnitude Quake Strikes off Chilean Coast

A major earthquake strikes off the coast of Chile, sparking a tsunami warning.

>> ellis: i´m rehema ellis in los angeles with late-breaking news. a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck in the pacific coast off the coast of northern chile near the mining area of iquique. these are the first images from chile tv. [ sirens wail ] you can hear the jarring sound of the sirens indicating a tsunami warning along the coastal cities. you can see cars leaving the area and crowds of people outside. according to chile tv, the first tsunami wave hit, registering about 8 feet at its highest. there have been reports of several aftershocks, one at 6.2 magnitude. according to the u.s. geological survey , the quake was very shallow, only 6.2 miles below the seabed, which would have made it feel stronger. the tsunami alert and a total evacuation order is in place for coastal regions. chile is on the ring of fire , with faults connecting to the western united states . again, there has been a major earthquake off the coast of chile -- magnitude 8.2.
