Winter alerts are up for 32 million people from the northern Rocky Mountains and the Upper Midwest, through the central Great Lakes region and into New England.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the landslide, but numerous slides have happened in Southern California due to drenching winter storms that saturated the ground.
Parts of Texas and Oklahoma have an extreme risk for wildfires, as Denver braces for its biggest winter storm of the season. At the same time, severe thunderstorms threaten the Plains on Wednesday and Thursday.
The skier died after falling 600 feet at Tuckerman Ravine, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Several other skiers were hurt on the mountain on the same day.
