Negotiations have raised hopes for a prolonged truce that would allow the release of more hostages as well as Palestinian prisoners.

Israel will also release more Palestinian prisoners as the truce enters a fifth day, while the U.S. pushes for a further extension and a broader hostage deal in new talks in Qatar.

The current president believes his close embrace of Israel, which he called for as vice president, gives him greater influence with Israeli leaders and the public.
