Using its nationwide records for over 129 million U.S. land parcels, RealtyTrac analyzed the property tax rates across the country and broke down where the highest and lowest rates are.

States with the highest average property taxes in dollars for single family homes:

  1. New York ($15,625)
  2. New Jersey ($8,108)
  3. New Hampshire ($5,795)
  4. Connecticut ($5,646)
  5. Hawaii ($5,024)

States with the lowest average property taxes in dollars for single family homes:

  1. Alabama ($618)
  2. West Virginia ($931)
  3. New Mexico ($1,096)
  4. Tennessee ($1,116)
  5. Indiana ($1,418)
