Cold Case Spotlight

"My brother had challenges in his life, but no one deserves what happened to him. No one," Virginia Culpepper told Dateline.

Culpepper's older brother, Ricky Herriage, was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds 28 years ago this weekend in rural Henderson County, Texas. Officials believe he was shot and killed and his body was thrown off a bridge in the early hours of March 8th, 1987. He was only 29 years old and left behind a young daughter and a stepson.

"There are just so many strange stories about what could have happened that night, but I have my suspicions," Culpepper told Dateline.

The majority of investigators working in the county in 1987 have since retired, but current Henderson County Sheriff Ronny Brownlow told the Athens Daily Review in 2007 they have not forgotten Herriage's murder.

"Since I came here in January of 1997, we’ve had two or three different pieces of information come up that we’ve run down,” Brownlow said. “There have been lots of man hours spent on it. You can tell by reading the files.”

Officials have never named a person of interest or any suspects in the case and all their leads have been exhausted.

"Someone here knows something. It's a very small town and when someone sneezes, you hear it," Culpepper told Dateline. "Whoever did this is still around and my brother deserves justice."
