FDA to post safety issues online for new drugs

Doctors and patients will be able to get more information about the risks of the latest drugs as federal health regulators begin posting their safety reviews online.

Under a new policy, the Food and Drug Administration says it will begin publishing summaries of potential safety issues with recently approved drugs.

The FDA is tasked with reviewing the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs before they reach the market. But some drug side effects only show up after they are launched and taken by millions of patients across the country.

The FDA's summaries will analyze side effect reports from doctors, patients and drug manufacturers. The agency plans to regularly publish summaries of those reviews for the public.
