A Kansas doctor has been sentenced to 30 years and his wife to 33 years for running a pain clinic linked to dozens of patient overdose deaths.

Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, Linda, were sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Wichita.

U.S. District Judge Monti Belot says evidence showed it was Linda Schneider who perpetuated the clinic as an income generator rather than a provider of competent medical care.

The Haysville couple were found guilty in June of unlawfully writing prescriptions, health care fraud and money laundering. Jurors convicted them of a moneymaking conspiracy prosecutors linked to 68 overdose deaths.

Prosecutors had asked for life sentences or the equivalent, while defense attorneys wanted the mandatory minimum 20 years in prison.
