Customers buying tickets on Delta Air Lines Inc.'s Web site this summer will have the chance to donate money to help offset the carbon dioxide created by their airline travel.
Delta said it's the first U.S. airline to offer customers the chance to help plant trees to offset carbon emissions, which are linked to global warming.
Beginning June 1, customers can opt to contribute $5.50 for a domestic round trip or $11 for an international roundtrip. The money will go to The Conservation Fund, which will use it to plant trees and help support its education and outreach programs.
Delta also said it has pledged to plant a tree for each of its 47,000 employees. It said it will make a donation to The Conservation Fund for every customer taking a Delta mainline or Delta Shuttle flight on Earth Day, April 22.
Shares of Delta, which will become worthless as the carrier exits bankruptcy protection were unchanged at 16 cents in over-the-counter trading.
