Two car bombs exploded in a market in east Baghdad on Saturday, starting fires in several shops and killing at least three people and wounding 12, police and witnesses said.

“There’s a car bomb here, many casualties, please send us ambulances,” a witness told Reuters by telephone from the scene minutes after the blast.

Another witness said many shops in the market were set on fire, with people trapped inside.

Police, who confirmed there was a fire in the market, said there were at least three dead and a dozen wounded.

The latest attacks came just days after a suicide bomber killed dozens of people in a crowded restaurant in Baghdad.

Iraq’s Shiite- and Kurdish-led government and its U.S. backers are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency that has killed thousands of people since the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
