A baby born in central India with an external heart that she was holding in one of her hands at the time of her birth has died of an infection, doctors said on Monday.
“The baby’s heart developed some infection, and after battling for her life for 72 hours, she breathed her last on Sunday evening,” said P.S. Sisodia, who led a team of doctors who examined the child.
Doctors separated the baby girl’s hand from her heart after her birth, and said she needed surgery to position the heart, which lay between her neck and collar bone, inside her body.
But her parents in Korba town in Chhattisgarh state could not afford surgery.
