Police discovered the body of a young girl on Thursday that had been stuck inside a suitcase and left on a busy sidewalk in Mexico City.
Investigators were working to identify the girl, thought to be between 5 and 6 years old, and establish the cause of death, a police spokeswoman said.
She was found inside the suitcase, dressed but missing her shoes and wrapped in a jacket, by a police patrol in the district of Tacuba on Thursday morning.
Police do not know the cause of death.
“There are no visible signs of beating, there are no injuries,” the spokeswoman said, adding: “(The suitcase) wasn’t hidden, it was on a public sidewalk for someone to find.”
Violent crime is common in the Mexican capital, one of the world’s biggest and most crowded cities, and kidnapping gangs, who target children along with adults, sometimes kill their victims even after a ransom has been paid.
The city of around 18 million is home to many street kids who live hand to mouth by washing windshields or begging.
