California authorities shut down traffic in both directions on a Long Beach freeway Wednesday while Los Angeles police tried to persuade a kidnapping suspect to get out of his vehicle after a chase ended.

LAPD spokesman Lt. Paul Vernon said police attempted to arrest the man on a kidnap warrant issued in December.

The man drove off and Long Beach police pursued him until he stopped on Interstate 710 at Florence. The Los Angeles County SWAT team was trying to coax him out of the vehicle.

Vernon said police were not sure how many people were in the vehicle.

The northbound and southbound Long Beach 710 Freeway was closed near Imperial Highway in the South Gate area, the California Highway Patrol said.
