A portion of hundreds of pounds of explosives stolen from a storage bunker surfaced Wednesday in containers in front of a fire station, authorities said.
About 200 pounds of dynamite sticks were in the containers. They were dropped off a day after the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives offered a $25,000 reward for information about the May 3 theft from Gold Mountain Mine Co. in Big Bear City.
Police closed off streets around the fire station and a freeway exit as a bomb squad used a robot to open the boxes. The explosives were safely removed.
Investigators were still seeking the rest of the 500 pounds of explosives and a 30-pound bag of ammonium nitrate.
“There’s still more missing, and we want the person who left the packages to come forward,” said ATF agent John D’Angelo.
Gold Mountain was storing the explosives properly, D’Angelo said. Officials with the company could not immediately be reached for comment.
