Downpours from a tropical depression churning toward Mexico's southwestern Pacific coast on Sunday flooded streets, businesses and homes and pushed trash onto some beaches in this resort city.

Heavy rains caused minor flooding of homes and shopping areas popular with tourists in low-lying parts of Acapulco, one of Mexico's oldest and best-known Pacific beach resorts. There were no reports of serious injuries.

Acapulco Mayor Felix Salgado said slow trash collection throughout the city caused refuse to pile up on street corners. Flood waters then carried waste toward the ocean, leaving beaches strewn with debris.

The mayor said the city hoped to have all the trash picked up by mid-June, but that continued problems with garbage were likely to persist until then.

Emergency response officials said highways were blocked by small mudslides and flooding throughout the southern state of Guerrero, which includes Acapulco.
