A mother and a bystander are dead after jumping into a swirling Illinois river to save the woman’s four-year-old son. And the boy’s uncle, a Marine just back from Iraq, is missing.
Brian Santoyo was rescued and resuscitated after he fell into the Kankakee River in Wilmington yesterday. Authorities say the Chicago boy had been out fishing with his family and some friends when he got caught in the undertow from a nearby dam.
Witnesses say people formed a human chain to try to rescue Brian, but the current was too strong. His mother was pulled from the water along with him but couldn’t be revived. Bystander Alberto Medina also drowned, and Marine Sergeant Jafet Santoyo, the boy’s uncle, disappeared in the water and is presumed drowned.
The youngster is hospitalized in stable condition.
