A stampede at a Hindu temple in eastern India on Saturday left at least four dead and 24 injured, a temple official said.

Thousands of Hindu worshippers had been waiting hours to enter the 12th century Jagannath Temple by the time the door was opened for prayers on the last day of a monthlong festival, said temple administrator Suresh Mahapatra.

The shrine, dedicated to the Hindu god Jagannath, is in Puri, a major pilgrimage site 40 miles southwest of Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa state.
