Five people were killed Tuesday when their car crashed head-on with a dump truck, authorities said.

The accident happened as the car tried to pass a string of vehicles on a county road about 23 miles west of Orlando, said Trooper Kim Miller, a spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash triggered a fire that engulfed the car, she said.

"People take risks all the time," Miller said. "It was a passing zone, but you're not allowed to pass until you make sure you're doing it safely."

The driver of the truck was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, Miller said.

Hours after the accident, the dump truck was marooned in a ditch, its front end crumpled and engine bare. Debris and human limbs were strewn across a closed stretch of road.

None of the victims was identified. Miller said she believed all the dead were men.
