Two women in a U.S. Embassy vehicle were shot dead in a midday carjacking on the main highway on the western outskirts of Nairobi on Saturday, police said.
Police said the two women were among five people travelling in a black four-wheel drive bearing diplomatic plates issued to the United States.
"There was a person who was driving and an elderly lady who took too long to get out of the vehicle and the gangsters shot them and threw them out," police spokesman Gideon Kibunjah said.
"The two were confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital."
Carjackings are common in the Kenyan capital, nicknamed "Nairobbery" by its residents, but they are far more likely to happen at night.
The shootings took place in Kinoo, a village-like western suburb of Nairobi on the road to resort towns like Naivasha favored for weekend getaways.
There have been no arrests yet, Kibunjah said.
A U.S. Embassy spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.
