A crash involving a hay truck led to a five-mile backup on Interstate 80 west of Fairfield early Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol said. The westbound lanes were shut down for awhile following the 5 a.m. crash, but all lanes were open again as of about 8 a.m.

Traffic remained backed up long after the road opened and drivers heading to the Bay Area from Sacramento were urged by officials to find other routes.

Officials said the truck jackknifed while entering the freeway from Red Top Road. About 250 bales spilled on the freeway.
