Spring has officially sprung, but serious ski bums know that now is the time to hit the trails and get some sun at the same time. Late-season powder lingers on slopes the world over, so don’t put away your gear just yet. We've found serious discounts at five premier spots in the US, Canada, and Europe. Stay right by the slopes in Vail or Mammoth Mountain from just $95/night or book an air-land combo to Whistler for $472. Been there, done that? Take a trip across the pond to Austria and Andorra, where packages start at only $700 and include air, hotel, and daily breakfast.
Veritable Ski Bargain in Vail from $389/nt
A ski break in Vail can’t be beat, because this chic winter playground in the Colorado Rockies gets plenty of spring snow. Prices drop once the the Hollywood stars have left the trails. Now, a three-night package at deluxe Lodge at Vail through April 22 costs just $389/night (a big savings from the peak season price of $599) with daily lift tickets and breakfast. This high-end lodge is a stone’s throw from the lifts at the heart of Vail Village, and Condé Nat Traveler says, "the design is more boutique than chain: The interior is accented in warm pine and festooned with the expected alpine-inspired decorations. Amenities include a heated outdoor pool flanked by hot tubs . . ." Note that this is a midweek rate; weekend price is $439/night.
Hit the Slopes in Canada’s Whistler for $472
Want to bundle your air and hotel at one sweet price? We recommend a ski fling north of the border to Canada where the ski season runs into late April. With the Expedia offer we found, you can hit the slopes through April 27 at one of North America’s top ski resorts, Whistler Blackcomb. $472 covers midweek air from San Francisco and a three-night sojourn at an all suite-hotel within striking distance of ski lifts. You’ll stay at the no-frills but well-located ResortQuest at Marketplace Lodge which features a covered outdoor spa, complimentary parking, free shuttle service, and comfy units with full kitchens.
Save at Mammoth Mountain from $95/nt
One of North America’s best-kept secrets is Mammoth Mountain ski resort in California. Tony Crocker, author of Your Guide to Snowfall claims: "No Sierra Nevada mountain preserves its snow as well." In fact, the ski season at Mammoth runs through Memorial Day, and often into June. Why not check it out for yourself this year? Mammoth Mountain offers a Spring Fest lodging package valid at select, rustic three-star properties from April 15 to May 31. Low nightly rates start at just $95 per person, with lift tickets thrown in. Note that a two-night stay is required.
Alpine Jaunt now for only $700
For late-season ski fun in the Austrian Alps, look no further than Ski Europe. There are a few places left on a week-long jaunt in the scenic Tyrolean town of Innsbruck for only $700. Valid for departures through mid-April, this terrific special covers airfare from New York (or your preferred getaway at low extra cost), seven nights at simple but pleasant Hotel Tautermann, and buffet breakfast daily. Airfare alone would normally exceed the total price of this package, so we recommend booking without further thought. Did we forget to mention Innsbruck’s 200 trails that spread over 310 miles of top-rated ski terrain?
Ski Getaway in Andorra for $929
If you want to schuss down slopes less skied before this season ends, we recommend a getaway in the tiny principality of Andorra. Nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, this pretty mountain country is famous for its first-rate runs, quaint towns, and tax-free shopping to boot. Ski Europe offers a seven-night package to Andorra for only $929, with a wealth of inclusions like air from New York to Barcelona, rental car instead of airport transfers, lodging at three-star Hotel Florida in the capital of Andorra La Vella, and complimentary buffet breakfast daily.
All quoted pricing is based on double occupancy. Note that the hotel deals listed don’t include taxes and gratuities, while package specials exclude air taxes and fees.
