London tourism booms

London welcomed a record 15.2 million visitors from overseas in 2006, and spending by Americans reached the highest level since 2000, city tourism officials said Monday. Last year’s visitor total was up 9.4 percent from 2005, the Visit London agency said.

London welcomed a record 15.2 million visitors from overseas in 2006, and spending by Americans reached the highest level since 2000, city tourism officials said Monday.

Last year’s visitor total was up 9.4 percent from 2005, the Visit London agency said.

The visitors spent 7.5 billion pounds ($15 billion), up from 6.9 billion pounds the previous year.

The number of visitors from Europe was up 11.6 percent to 9.6 million, and visitors from the United States increased 5.2 percent to 2.4 million, the report said.

Spending by U.S. visitors rose to 1.5 billion pounds ($3 billion), the highest since 2000, Visit London said.
