Los Angeles billionaire and supermarket mogul Ron Burkle may make a bid for Dow Jones & Co., the publisher of The Wall Street Journal, according to a report on Fortune magazine’s Web site.

Burkle, who sits on Yahoo’s board of directors, has been trying to enlist the Internet giant as a partner for a bid, according to the report.

As the Bancroft family, which controls Dow Jones, weighs a recent $5 billion bid from media mogul Rupert Murdoch of News Corp., Fortune says Burkle is working on a deal with Dow Jones’ union and could go public with a longshot offer for the company as early as this week.
