A landslide killed nine people in northern Tajikistan, while an earthquake in a central region killed another three, the emergencies agency said Monday.

Sunday’s landslide struck two villages in the northern Asht district, 185 miles north of the capital of Dushanbe, killing nine people and damaging many houses, said emergencies agency spokesman Dustmurod Zabirov.

Also Sunday, five villages in the Rasht district, 125 miles east of Dushanbe, were hit by a magnitude 6 earthquake that destroyed and damaged houses, Zabirov said. The quake killed three teenagers, and three other people have been hospitalized with various injuries, he said. Tremors of magnitude 3 were felt in Dushanbe, he said.

Earthquakes and landslides are common in this impoverished Central Asian nation where mountains cover 90 percent of the territory.
