The number in the phone book promises to help seniors with health insurance problems, but the operators on the other end are running a phone sex service. The number is listed in the blue pages of the Gulftel phone book. If you've ever encountered a rude operator, these are down right nasty.
Little Miss Nasty is not going to answer Reynolds' questions. "You've got to be joking." Its not a joke. There's no way for local seniors to know they're going to get this sex chat when they dial the number for Medicare in the new Gulftel phone book's blue pages government section. "I wanna hang up. It's terrible. It's trash."
David McKelroy with the Daphne Senior Center says it's not the information seniors, like Reynolds, really need to hear. "As medicare has changed over the last year or two you've got to have the proper plan. Without the proper plan, it could be costly."
Gulftel says the number used to be correct. Gulftel President Randy Wood doesn't know when it changed or why. "We want to provide good information to our customers and anytime we cant, we'll work hard in the future so we can."
The number is correct in the on-line directory found on the internet and Gulftel executives are discussing ways to fix the hardcopy problem without having to reprint thousands of phone books.
But for some seniors whose eyes can't possibly get bigger, it's not just a shock, is a health concern, a financial concern and no answer is going to be good enough. "I might have another heart attack or something. That's just unreal."
The correct number for Medicare is 1-800-633-4227.
