Dozens of cars were involved Sunday in a pileup on a foggy stretch of highway that killed at least one person.
The Wisconsin State Patrol shut down Interstate 90 in both directions, causing a traffic backup of about five miles, according to a Wisconsin State Patrol dispatcher who declined to give her name.
Multiple people were injured and at least one person was killed, the dispatcher said.
The accidents happened just east of the city, Dane County sheriff's Lt. Dan Bolch said.
The Madison area was fogged in all day, with visibility of an eighth of a mile or less when the pileup started, said Chris Franks, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sullivan.
