The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said in an interview on Afghan television that he would resign from his position "in the next few months."
Zalmay Khalilzad told Afghanistan's Ariana Television Network in comments broadcast Wednesday he planned to work in the private sector.
"My decision is that I will resign from my official work in the next few months," he said. He did not say when he would resign.
The Afghan-born Khalilzad has served as the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq. His background has fueled rumors he might run for president of Afghanistan, but the U.N. ambassador has repeatedly said he is not a candidate.
