Office workers poured into the streets of Beijing as the tremor hit Monday in one of the most devastating earthquake to hit China in three decades, but Olympics stadiums apparently were not damaged.

More than 5,000 have been killed in the quake, which struck around 2 p.m. local time Monday.

In the capital, which will host the summer Olympics in August, there was no visible damage and the showpiece Bird’s Nest stadium was unscathed, the project’s engineer told Xinhua.
